The Ultimate BMDD – Battlefield Earth

August 9, 2010 | 2

On September 1st the BMDD Gods have deemed us worthy of the greatest bad movie ever made.  Battlefield Earth will become available to Instant Watch on Netflix.

I have seen an unreasonable number of bad movies in my time.  Yet there is one that is so gleefully horrid that the first time I saw it, I sat in awe of the sheer shittitude that confronted me.  Battlefield Earth was released in 2000, and depicts the human race’s struggle against an alien race known as the Pschlos (seriously – Hubbard added an “L” to the word Psychos in an attempt to be clever.)  It stars John Travolta as the leader of the ridiculously named alien race, and it was based on Travolta’s religious icon, L Ron Hubbard’s book of the same name.

Matthew Vaughn

On episode # 98 of Talkingship, I lamented the coming downfall of the superhero movie.  It looks like I have a surprising ally in this thinking.  Matthew Vaughn, director of Kick-Ass and now casting for X-Men First Class, agrees with me that the super-hero genre is coming to a close.

He said this in a recent interview with the LA Times when asked about the genre he is currently directing in: “It’s been mined to death and in some cases the quality control is not what it’s supposed to be.  People are just going to get bored of it.”

Quantum Leap THE MOVIE

August 8, 2010 | 3

Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett

A nice surprise was hidden in the layer after layer of dork-cake that was served up at the 2010 Comic Con in San Diego this year.  There was a Quantum Leap retrospective starring none other than my original man-crush, Scott Bakula.  When the subject of a Quantum Leap movie was broached, Bakula let the news slip that it is beyond possible.  In fact, the creator of Quantum Leap, Donald P. Bellisario, is already well into a script for the movie version of his hit series!

There is some bad news though.  While Scott Bakula said that Bellisario was writing parts in the new film for both Bakula and Dean Stockwell, they would not be the stars of the movie.  They are simply too old now.  Really?  You dragged Harrison Ford’s musty ass off of Flockhart to star in an unwanted Indy film.  Why can’t Bakula and Stockwell come back to Leap?  Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers.

5 Worst Videogame Movies – A Challenge

August 5, 2010 | 2

Have your cycles synced or something?

I have spent far more then my share of hours plopped down in front of the TV watching the worst garbage that Hollywood can dish out.  I am a glutton for punishment, and seeing cheesy decapitations hits me in the special spot of the brain that apparently can not be over stimulated.  For this reason, it would be understandable to assume that I love video-game based films, as they are nearly always utter crap.  Yet this is not the case.  For some reason, I get offended by video-game adaptations that don’t live up to (or even come near) their potential.  That’s why I’m making this list.  It’s a challenge to all of us to see these movies and derive some modicum of entertainment from them.
