Get ready for your return to Westeros

I remember the first time I read George R R Martin’s, A Game of Thrones. I was blown away by the number and complexity of the characters and the expansiveness of the world. It was a beast of a book at over 800 pages and I loved every minute of it. Over the next few months I devoured the three remaining books with each one being longer than the first. When I finished the fourth book I couldn’t wait to read the fifth which was due for publication in 2006. It was 2005 at the time. Six years later, Martin finally released the fifth book. It was a long enough gap that I feel the need to reread all 4500+ pages of the prior books before reading the newest installment. Suffice it to say that hasn’t happened yet.

In the interim (2007) I was reading Entertainment weekly and saw an article that HBO had purchased the television rights for the series. To say I was excited would be an understatement. My brother, who first suggested the books, and I had often discussed what an amazing television series these books would make if done right. They were far too complex to be accurately represented in a movie, but we didn’t see a big chance of anyone ever making them into a show. I checked back on the status a few times to see if they would actually start production, but there wasn’t much to read. Then sometime in early 2010 the first teaser was shown. I think my heart skipped a few beats.

A year later I was not at all disappointed. I knew that HBO would do a good job with the series, but they honestly exceeded my expectations. The show was everything I could have hoped for. Well, mostly. They did HBO-ify it, but that was to be expected. If there’s not a sex scene in the book they’ll figure out a way to get some boobs in there, don’t you worry. I also have a few gripes about the representation of the Dire Wolves, but I’d hate to spoil anything for you if you haven’t read the books or seen the show.

All this to say, the second season starts in just 2 months. I’m beyond excited. The first season exceeded all of my expectations and I can’t wait to see what they come up with this season as well as meet some of the new characters that come into play. Check out the newest trailer below.

Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie

Technically a remake of his own 1984 thirty minute live-action film, a homage to James Whale’s Frankenstein, this 3D stop motion version gives me a new hope, a hope that Burton can once again produce something dark yet beautiful. It’s been too long since the classics of Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas and if you haven’t seen the oh so brilliant Vincent (1982) then do so the very second you’ve finished reading this article. It is masterfully narrated by Vincent Price and at under six minutes long it won’t take up much of your time, even after repeat viewings.

So what is this Frankenweenie all about then? It’s a simple tale about a boy and his dog. After the dog (Sparky) is killed in a car accident, the mad scientist boy (Victor) resurrects him from the dead and well, you should know how the rest plays out in this age old story. It’s worth watching the original just to see the many familiar faces from movies of old and also to compare the two when this is released in October. As for the voice cast, I am personally pleased not seeing Helena Bonham Carter or Johnny Depp on the list (I don’t have anything against them personally), instead Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice), Martin Landau (Ed Wood) and Martin Short will feature. The producer, Allison Abbate, had this to say; “Everything is so based on [Burton’s] life, his recollection and his experience. He’s in every frame.”

So let’s hope he can let us forget about the disappointments of Corpse Bride and Alice In Wonderland (a movie I have tried to watch on more than one occasion and failed) and bring about a new era of the weird and wonderful that is, Tim Burton.

Please for the love of God, no singing!

ParaNorman

I’m a little more excited about this one as it’s from the creator’s of Coraline, a movie I adore. Directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell take the helm and give us a story about a zombie-obsessed teenager entrusted with saving his New England village from the scourge of an ancient evil. The directors have described the project as being an homage to the movies they loved as kids: Goonies, Stand By Me, Ghostbusters, early Sam Raimi and even Scooby-Doo. It sounds like a great follow on to Coraline but Fell insists it’s more akin to Super 8. Expect to hear the voices of Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), John Goodman and Casey Affleck (Oceans Eleven). Due for release September (UK).

Paranorman

I’m excited to see this art-form is still being used even today. The old style animation (Bugs Bunny etc) seems to have all but disappeared from our cinemas and so I give thanks to these movie makers for keeping something I treasure alive.

Stallone loves the kiddos

The first Expendables sucked. Sorry to be a downer, but I’d rather watch reels of hotel implosions than sit through Sylvester’s action opus again. However, it seems some folks liked that movie because of all the cool booms and stuff. They liked the violence, explosions, blood, and machismo so much that Sylvester Stone was able to make a sequel.

And that sequel will be PG-13.

WHAT?!?! Are you serious? The only possible enjoyment a human being could glean from the first movie was the violence. Why would you temper that in the sequel? Well, apparently it wasn’t the violence that was an issue, it was the cursing. That’s fucking stupid.

From what I’ve been able to dig up, the problems came from Chuck Norris’ involvement. They really wanted him in the movie, but he had an issue with the vulgarity in the script. He agreed to be in the movie only if they took the vulgarity out. Because, clearly, hearing the word, “Shit” is much worse on our collective psyche than seeing a person’s head explode. Thanks for saving our humanity, Chuck!

Water, the planet’s core is made of.

You’re sitting there watching a movie and you think to yourself, this is fantastic! The plot and action is gluing you to your seat, eyes fixated on the 21” mass of curved glass in front of you. A decade passes by, the internet is in full flow and you’ve just watched that same movie for the hundredth time. You find an article headlined ’The 10 Worst Movies of the 90’s” on this great internet and find the movie you loved so much is listed. The acting ripped to shreds, the plot left in a stinking heap on the floor and the production quality laughed at like a giggling school girl. It must be a mistake right? Two hours of trawling through the internet proves that it’s not a mistake or a joke, every Tom, Dick and Jitterbug out there has bashed one of your favourite movies and so it’s confirmed, this is now your guilty pleasure.
