The Ultimate BMDD – Battlefield Earth

On September 1st the BMDD Gods have deemed us worthy of the greatest bad movie ever made.  Battlefield Earth will become available to Instant Watch on Netflix.

I have seen an unreasonable number of bad movies in my time.  Yet there is one that is so gleefully horrid that the first time I saw it, I sat in awe of the sheer shittitude that confronted me.  Battlefield Earth was released in 2000, and depicts the human race’s struggle against an alien race known as the Pschlos (seriously – Hubbard added an “L” to the word Psychos in an attempt to be clever.)  It stars John Travolta as the leader of the ridiculously named alien race, and it was based on Travolta’s religious icon, L Ron Hubbard’s book of the same name.

When the film was released, on May 12, 2000, it was universally panned.  Critics and audiences alike agreed that it plumbed new depths of utter shit, and within a week it was clear that it would go down as one of the biggest flops in history.  Travolta had originally hoped to split the book’s adaptation into two films, but with the failure of the first it was clear that the story would never be finished.

Battlefield Earth goes far beyond the best of what can be hoped for from a Bad Movie Drinky Drinky film.  A lot of money was spent on it, and it has several name actors littered throughout.  The storyline is ludicrous in ways that will shock you, and there may be more easy jokes to be had at the movie’s expense then anything I have seen in all of my BMDD years.  This film is a sure-fire BMDD hit, and I look forward to scheduling it soon.  Listen to the Talkingship About Movies podcast for more information on when we will be having this sure-fire classic BMDD!
