The X-Men First Class Death Knell

Matthew Vaughn

On episode # 98 of Talkingship, I lamented the coming downfall of the superhero movie.  It looks like I have a surprising ally in this thinking.  Matthew Vaughn, director of Kick-Ass and now casting for X-Men First Class, agrees with me that the super-hero genre is coming to a close.

He said this in a recent interview with the LA Times when asked about the genre he is currently directing in: “It’s been mined to death and in some cases the quality control is not what it’s supposed to be.  People are just going to get bored of it.”

This was why he was interested in directing the new X-Men film.  He thinks he should do it now before the genre dies off.  In fact, he was asked to direct the third X-Men film, and he was very vocal that if he had directed that film, it would have turned out better – a little bit of a conceited thing to say, but I agree with him.  He explains his decision to finally direct a proper super hero movie by saying, “I’ve always wanted to do a big-budget superhero film and I think we’ve kind of crossed the Rubicon with superhero films. I think [the opportunity to do one], it’s only going to be there two or three more times. Then the genre is going to be dead for a while because the audience has just been pummeled too much.”

My prediction is that the coming flood of Super Hero movies is going to finally kill the genre.  I am a comic book fan, I worked at a comic book store, I’m 33 and I have a hold at my local comic book show – I’m a dork, yet even I struggle to find any interest in the new crop of films: Thor, Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Captain America… yawn.  However, of all the announced films, X-Men First Class still has my geek juice jumping.  I can’t wait to watch Professor X and Magneto build Xavier’s school and put together the first group of X-Men.
