Xbox One vs PS4 in 2014: Which Has the Best Games?

Xbox One vs PS4 in 2014: Which Has the Best Games?

The dust has settled on the launch of PS4 and Xbox One, and after mediocre launch lineups for both consoles it’s time to take a look at what’s coming next. This article will look at all the exclusives coming out over the first half of 2014, so you can make your decision as to which console is going to the best throughout the year (spoiler alert: it’s the Xbox One).

PlayStation 4

Sony’s flagship console doesn’t actually have any exclusives coming for a while: a good three months, in fact. That will change on March 21, with the launch of inFamous: Second Son, the latest instalment in the slightly-above-average inFamous series. You play as Delsin Rowe, a superhero who can absorb the powers of other superheroes. The game looks good graphically, but will the gameplay hold up? Only time will tell.

PS4’s big racing game, Driveclub, is also expected to launch in March, although no date has been set yet. We were unimpressed with the game when we had some hands on time last year, but hopefully it will have received a few tweaks since then.

Other than these two games, the release schedule is sparse. Jonathan Blow’s new puzzler, The Witness, will be coming out at some point in the summer, and Octodad: Dadliest Catch is also going to be out sometime in the next few months…but that’s pretty much it. The PS4 is not your best bet right now if games are what you’re looking for.

Xbox One

Microsoft’s storming out of the gates a lot earlier, with Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare launching on February 18. The third-person shooter is based on the ridiculously popular strategy game, and it looks like it’s going to be a whole load of fun.

A month later, on March 11, the console-selling behemoth that is Titanfall comes out, and it’s set to be a huge success. The game’s been met with hugely positive previews, and developers Respawn Entertainment have a track record of making great multiplayer shooters. This will almost certainly be the game that defines next-gen in early 2014, and it’s a Microsoft exclusive.

Microsoft’s managed to retain a strong lineup throughout Q2, with the supremely interesting Project Spark launching at some point (the beta starts in a few weeks), along with fun Kinect title Kinect Sports Rivals.

Although the quantity of titles to look forward to is the same on both platforms, the quality of releases looks to be a little superior on Xbox One. If you can get your hands on both consoles, we’d highly recommend it (you’ll miss out on some great games no matter which console you get), but if you have to pick just one we’d recommend the Xbox One.

Stay tuned to Talkingship over the year to get full reviews on all of the above titles.

you know man i think you are a big xbox fannnnnnn and i see that after I read it your article so Ps4 has an amazing games such as xbox 1,but not every one likes strategy games so in my opinion I rather racing game then strategy games on other hand I love so much TitanFall and Infamous second son to,, so don’t be stupid fan and be reasonable

  • verity treacle

Talking Ship… you forgot to mention Kinect Sports Rivals, bet you cannot wait for that exclusive to arrive… at least it’ll be something better to do than saying XBox Off…

  • Whuty

    What about The Order?!

  • Jed ‘Papa Doc’ Arain

This article is obviously from a pro-xbot. Titanfall is going to define next-gen gaming in 2014? Yeahhhhhhh, right. If anything, it’s gonna be inFamous: Second Son. Also, talk about some of the non-exclusive games coming out for both platforms. Dying Light is a SWEET game coming out in the next 2-3 months as well as Thief on or around Feb 21st. Your article makes it sound like absolutely no games are coming out for either console until Summer/Fall 2014, when there are a bunch of non-exclusive games (and maybe even exclusive that you left out) slated for release! Watch Dogs is another HUGE game that I’d say would define next-gen in 2014 over Titanfall… geez! I seriously doubt a FPS game like Titanfall would be the defining point in 2014 or early 2014…

  • generic-user-name a.k.a GUN

    PS4:

“the latest instalment in the slightly-above-average inFamous series.”

“We were unimpressed with the game when we had some hands on time last year,”

    X1:

“The third-person shooter is based on the ridiculously popular strategy
game, and it looks like it’s going to be a whole load of fun.” (Also coming to PS4 as the article nicely ignores)

“the console-selling behemoth that is Titanfall” (Amazing how it’s already a console selling behemoth even though it’s months from release and will be out on PC also)

“the supremely interesting Project Spark” (The adjectives man, so obvious)

“along with fun Kinect title Kinect Sports Rivals.” (Fun? Kinect? WHAT?)

In conclusion: talkingship.com is a place to avoid.

Also, let’s pretend The Order doesn’t exist.

  • KP

AD block on for this site

  • Dennis Crosby

He didn’t mention alot of game that are suppose to come out because they don’t have release dates.he could of easily through in the order,Halo, quantum break, the last guardian, but none of these games have release dates

  • Dennis Crosby

From the look of the comment section its a lot of pro-Sony fans one thing you have to realize that this is a opinionated article so you guys bash the author for his opinion is just down right disrespectful to this website and the gaming community.you guy act as if it not for Sony its not right. Everyone has there right to have an opinion. They way you feel about Sony is the way the author might feel about Microsoft. This childish behavior has to stop. Everyone who looking from the outside in to this community see us as immature children fighting over plastic.we have to start to treat each other with respect and being ok with other opinion

  • Shaxster

    1. I have a PS4 and an Xbox One, and actually prefer my PS4.
    2. I’ve never been impressed with inFamous, and when I played Driveclub last year it just wasn’t very good.
    3. Garden Warfare has only been announced for 360, X1 and PC (so far, at least)
    4. It’s not unreasonable to assume that Titanfall is a console-seller, it’s got hugely positive previews and will likely review well.
    5. Project Spark looks fascinating and has received very positive previews.
    6. Again, I’ve played Kinect Sports Rivals and it’s superb.

  • Shaxster

The Order doesn’t have a release date yet and it’s highly unlikely it’s launching in the first 6 months of this year (which are the only months this article focusses on).

  • Shaxster

I have a PS4, and I love it. In fact, I barely touch my Xbox One. But having played quite a few of the games on this list and having heard a lot about the others, I had to conclude that for the first 6 months of this year Xbox One has better games coming.

  • Shaxster

It doesn’t have a release date yet, and it almost certainly isn’t coming out in the next six months. It might come out in the fall, but this article only goes up to Q2.

  • Shaxster

I’m not an Xbot, I have a PS4 and love it. Based on previews, Titanfall is going to redefine multiplayer (in the same way that Modern Warfare did), and that’s pretty defining for next-gen.

I also decided not to include non-exclusives in this list because they don’t really add anything to the comparison.

  • Shaxster

Thanks for the feedback/comments. Interestingly enough, I actually prefer my PS4 to my X1 😉

  • Shaxster

Well we don’t have ads, so not sure how effective that’s going to be.

  • mad games

it’s your opinion I will respected, but in my choice I will take Infamous second son no matter what it has an amazing ,stunning graphics and a huge amount of fun..

  • Shaxster

Fair enough :) each to their own, after all! Thanks for being civil, it makes these comment threads a much nicer place.

  • mad games

    You welcome Brother…

  • KP

Your article title says “2014” not “the first 6 months”

  • Shaxster

Title says that for brevity: I clarify that I’m only talking about first 6 months in the opening paragraph. Trying to speculate any further ahead than that would be a bit difficult.

  • BalramRules

    Lol, what a response. xD

  • Chungles

Why was this shit on my Flipboard? Terrible excuse for journalism.

  • Fan of Both

Also that the PS4 will have the only baseball game. Sports games are not usually notable but the fact that the PS4 will have the only mlb baseball game for this year and maybe a few more is notable.

  • da Boss

Dude, fuck all these games. Wait until the new uncharted comes out, sweet jesus that is gonna be awesome. Like for reals guaranteed game of the year. I would buy a ps4 over the X1 ANY day just for uncharted

  • Shaxster

    Sorry you think that :(

  • Shaxster

Yup, I’m hyped for the new Uncharted as well. But I don’t think it’ll come out until next year.

  • Shaxster

That is notable, actually. Hadn’t thought of that. However, MLB games release in the fall, don’t they? This article only covers up to summer.

  • KP

For the sake of brevity you created a misleading title. Not a good tradeoff.

  • Shaxster

Eh, perhaps. We have different views of importance, I think. For me, the title has to be snappy and short (for easy sharing). The first paragraph explains fully what the article’s doing, and IMO that’s enough. Thanks for the feedback though: will take it into consideration for future posts.

  • generic-user-name a.k.a GUN

The Order is coming in 2014.

  • KP

But Titanfall isn’t a Xbox One exclusive. Also launching on PC.

  • Alexbee11

Well ud recommend wrong. U obviously are an xbox fan, and fail to tell people about MORE PS4 GAMES!!! THE DIVISION, WATCHDOGS, METAL GEAR SOLIIDDD!!! KNACK!! THE CREW etc. And no its not slightly better on xbox. Xbox costs 100 bux more and for what a camera? Ps4 camera is 60. And live costs more than ps+ and I already had ps+ because I love how much free stuff they dish out with it, including could saves. So u sir… are mis informed lol. Ur a cake :3

btw go ahead and hate me, but honestly I played both and definitely ps4 all the way. Some with a lot of youtubers like WhiteBoy7thst. My name is alex too, im white too haha. Definitely ps4. And I know an easy legal way to upload to youtube. Sooo easy. Msg me on PSN if u wanna know how! Lol my username is the same on here and on psn. P S 4 Fk xbox. I had an xbox. Its bawls lols

  • Shaxster

When I say exclusive I mean exclusive to one of the next gen consoles. As in, it’s coming to X1 but not PS4. Octodad and The Witness are also coming to PC (Octodad’s actually launching first on PC), don’t see you mentioning that!

  • KP

There are a plethora of pithy titles you should be able to think of without being misleading.

  • Shaxster

I own a PS4. I prefer my PS4 to my Xbox One. And I’m comparing exclusives here, multiplatform titles are irrelevant.

  • Shaxster

Coming in 2014, but not in the first 6 months.

  • Shaxster

Like I said, if you actually *read* the article it stops being misleading. But thanks for the feedback.

  • generic-user-name a.k.a GUN

    1. Irrelevant to this article and non-provable.

    2. I believe reception from both critics and fans have shown infamous to be more than slightly-above-average.

    3. http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2014/01/10/popcap-hints-at-plants-vs-zombies-garden-warfare-ps3ps4-announcement-in-the-coming-months/

    4. It is unreasonable to call it a console seller, how many games that have reviewed well have went on to flop or do ‘ok’? Titanfall won’t have the same mass appeal as COD did, don’t think that just because it’s made by the people behind COD4 that it will match it’s success.

    5. From the previews I’ve seen it’s extremely buggy and, like Titanfall, will likely be a better experience on PC.

    6. Well, if you say so.

  • generic-user-name a.k.a GUN

It’ll be out in 2014, forgive me for being misled by the misleading title.

  • Jed ‘Papa Doc’ Arain

I’ll retract my “Xbot” statement, but I just felt like it was a pro-Xbox article (as did many others, lol). Since the article is titled “Xbox One vs PS4 in 2014: Which Has the Best Games?,” I felt that it was a bit misleading because there are so many other games coming out for both consoles that you had left out. Also, I agree with your statement where you say that “next-gen multiplayer” will be defined, or redefined, by Titanfall. But, the statement that Titanfall is the defining next-gen game of early 2014 or 2014 overall… nah, not one bit. I still stick by my comment where I say inFamous:SS would be a game that defines next-gen in early 2014 over Titanfall. When speaking about 2014 in general, it’s obviously too early to tell, but games like “The Order: 1886” are being praised so faithfully and even without the general public (or even most people in the gaming industry) seeing one single gameplay video, lol! I’m definitely wanting to see what “The Order: 1886” has in store for us (I’m sure we’ll get our first gameplay videos at or around E3 2014, if not sooner, as long as it’s not delayed). Also, games like “The Division” could be a defining “next-gen multiplayer” game within 2014, although an insider source recently spoke out saying that the the engine is up and running but the game itself has barely been constructed (that’s Ubisoft for ya, lol). I’m sure “The Division” will be a 2015 release if this rumor turns out to be true (possibly the definition of a “next-gen multiplayer game” of 2015?). There are lots of other games I could ramble on about, but I’ll just end my rambling here. :p Basically, all I’m saying is that Titanfall is more than likely going to be a GREAT game and it may possibly redefine certain aspects of multiplayer gaming, but when speaking about “a game that defines next-gen,” Titanfall is surely not going to be the #1 pick when all is said and done.

  • KP

You don’t see me mention those because Titanfalls hype eclipses the likes of those indies. So natural I’m more informed about the details of Titanfalls release.

  • Shaxster

Fair enough. My point is that most of these games are also coming to PC, but that’s irrelevant to the PS4 vs Xbox One comparisons I’m making in this article.

  • KP

I did read it. Imagine my surprise when the first section had to correct the misleading title.

  • Nongeneric

Garden Warfare has yet to be officially announced for PS4, and since this article is talking about 2014, that makes it an X1 exclusive for 2014.

Titanfall is coming to X1 and PC, last time I checked PS4 was not PC, so it is X1 exclusive.

Kinect Adventures on 360 sold 20 million copies over its lifetime, way more than any PS game ever has so whether you think it is fun or not does not really matter, the world thinks it is fun.

PS Fanboys are the worst, X1 is a clear winner in games this year. Let’s not forget Fable, Halo, and Sunset Overdrive all due out this year.

Generic User Name please take your generic brain and ps4 fanboyism elsewhere

  • KP

I agree it’s completely appropriate in your article comparing the two consoles. Just the way you worded it in your comment was………… dare I say………….. misleading.

  • generic-user-name a.k.a GUN

True, it hasn’t been officially announced but everyone knows it’s coming to PS4, and there is a good chance it will happen in 2014.

“Titanfall is coming to X1 and PC”

    So far so good…

    “it is X1 exclusive”

Whoops, you were doing so well too. You do not need an X1 to play Titanfall, therefore it is not exclusive. But besides, I never claimed that Titanfall wasn’t an X1 console exclusive so I don’t know why you feel the need to bring that up.

Kinect Adventures came with every Kinect, obviously it sold well when you include that. Sales=/=Fun.

    Nice try though.

  • Guest

Sure, take a game like Infamous that gets scores like 9/10 and call it “slightly than above average game” and then take Titanfall, a game which we know nothing about and over hype it like it’s Alien Colonial Marines.

  • Best

Sure, take a game like Infamous that gets scores like 9/10 and call it “slightly than above average game” and then take Titanfall, a game which we know nothing about and over hype it like it’s Alien Colonial Marines. We’ll let the market decide.

  • Escopablobar

You have a right to your opinion. I lost all interest in Titanfall once it was revealed that it was foregoing a single player campaign for “narrative multiplayer”. PvZ looks fun and Project Spark is hardly a game. On the PS4 side of things Infamous looks great and I really have no interest in the other 2. I don’t think either console has an advantage in the first half of the year. Though, I must say Infamous looks to be the most “AAA” of the bunch. But that is my opinion.
