Is the Avatar Re-Release Worth Seeing?

August 28, 2010 | 4

Avatar - Now With More Hair-Porn!

James Cameron is already holding the top two spots in the largest selling movies of all time.  Avatar wears the crown with nearly $750 million and Titanic sinks just beneath at $600 million, but Cameron wants to make sure no one comes along to challenge him. This weekend, Cameron is re-releasing Avatar in 800+ 3D theaters throughout the country.

This isn’t just a simple replay though.  The new version of Avatar sports an extra 8-9 minutes to the already ridiculous two and a half hour running time.  Whether or not you plan on seeing this in theaters again depends on a lot of factors, but I’ve done some digging and have uncovered what you can expect to see from the added footage.  Spoiler Alert: none of it looks very interesting.

I will probably go see this with my daughter because we didn’t see it in 3D the first time around.  I don’t think it’s a good film, but I can’t deny that it’s gorgeous, and I feel like I’d be missing out to not see it in the theaters with those silly glasses on.  However, if I had already seen it in 3D I would have no desire to see it again.  It’s too long, too silly, and the promise of 9 more minutes of footage deemed too useless for the first release doesn’t sound very appetizing.  This is a James Cameron movie though, and he is well known for cutting great scenes out of his movies to accommodate film standards.  For instance, in Aliens he cut a scene showing how Ripley had lost a child, which is an important bit of backstory that helps explain the way she latches onto Newt when the child first appears.  So maybe Avatar will have similar scenes that they just couldn’t manage to pack into the first release’s 162 minutes.  Here’s what I’ve been able to find out about the new footage.

Bioshock PG-13

August 27, 2010 | 1
Big Daddy and his Little Sister

Ask most gamers what video game would make a great movie and you’ll get a pretty eclectic list.  Passions run hot about which game has the most interesting narative, but there is one game that seems to make it onto everyone’s list: Bioshock.

While The Little Mermaid has been the defacto “Under Da Sea” icon for over two decades, the director of the Pirates of the Carribean movies has decided to walk the plank and try his hand at film-making in the deep blue (or film PRODUCING anyhow.)  He has been a champion of turning the dark, ominous world of Bioshock into a major motion picture.  In fact, the movie is already slated for a 2013 release!  However, they’ve just hit their first major snag in production: The studios want it to be a PG-13 film.

Scott Pilgrim vs. El Mariachi

Why does El Mariachi hate me?

So here’s the deal. Most reviews either glorify or crucify Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I’m just going to give my point of view.

Review : The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

August 14, 2010 | 5

Make this live action? What can miss?

I’m not sure what to think of Nicholas Cage. He’ll put out a fairly average family-adventure movie (National Treasure) that my wife and I can watch in the same room without groaning at the others choice.  Then he’ll crank out a few steaming piles of shit (Wicker Man, Bangkok Dangerous) that make me all but give up on him. Then when I’m not looking, he’ll drop a monster of a performance on me (Kick Ass) and make me worship him yet again. I swear I need Lithium when I go to his films because he causes me to act bipolar.

Thank you Jon Turteltaub for making me believe again. Thank you for bringing back a Nicholas that my wife and I can enjoy together. Thank you for taking a musical cartoon about a lazy mouse with a penchant for fucking with janitorial tools and crafting a movie that I would be willing to pay to see again.

Quantum Leap THE MOVIE

August 8, 2010 | 3

Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett

A nice surprise was hidden in the layer after layer of dork-cake that was served up at the 2010 Comic Con in San Diego this year.  There was a Quantum Leap retrospective starring none other than my original man-crush, Scott Bakula.  When the subject of a Quantum Leap movie was broached, Bakula let the news slip that it is beyond possible.  In fact, the creator of Quantum Leap, Donald P. Bellisario, is already well into a script for the movie version of his hit series!

There is some bad news though.  While Scott Bakula said that Bellisario was writing parts in the new film for both Bakula and Dean Stockwell, they would not be the stars of the movie.  They are simply too old now.  Really?  You dragged Harrison Ford’s musty ass off of Flockhart to star in an unwanted Indy film.  Why can’t Bakula and Stockwell come back to Leap?  Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers.
