So here’s the deal. Most reviews either glorify or crucify Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I’m just going to give my point of view.
-The script is weak, to be honest. It tried to stay as true as possible to the original comic (which is a big no no, in the end, you are trying to give your viewers a cinematic experience). It has some quotable cool kid lines but it tries to be as graphical as it can be to clarify the loop holes and the back story (which is creative, in it’s way) which comes cool and fresh but pretty bleh and cheap. I didn’t pay ten dollars to see comic panels.
-While the fighting is cool, it isn’t interesting. The only fight I truly cared for was the last one. All the fights had the same approach (Scott Pilgrim is fucked, he gets some help, he learns the weakness of the opponent – boom – he wins, or lets the opponent defeat himself.). They even used a fucking Deus-ex Machina when fighting the vegetarian ex with super powers. (I’m not going to spoil it, but you might know what I’m talking about.)
-A man kicks a woman. It made me grind my teeth all the way going home.
-It wasn’t for an open crowd. It’s way too specific for the nerd crowd. Most of the people didn’t get the references. It was just a big blowjob to Nintendo.
-The movie is a big fucking advertisement. The guy wearing a sharpie t-shirt, ordering coke Zero… playing Nintendo DS?
-The way it was cut. The beginning was a fucking rush, where all the background information about the character hits you in the face, really fast. Then in the middle everything slows down, way down.
-Finally, I honestly expected something else. From hearing what everybody said in twitter I was expecting to be able to turn my brain off, and forget the film shit I learned at school, but the movie just kept bugging me. It was REALLY … REALLY PREDICTABLE. You knew he was going to win. You knew how he was going to manage to get out of trouble. You knew how his love triangle-relationship was going to get solved. THERE WERE NO SURPRISES.
And then again, this is my opinion. I know we all have different points of view and all.
