Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Epic Movie Poster!

Before you read any further, I feel you need to know that I waited for half an hour to get into a midnight showing of this movie. I’m a fan of the Scott Pilgrim comics and will be getting the video-game as soon as it releases on the Xbox Marketplace. That said, I’ll try to be as unbiased and straight with you as I can in this review………………………………….

I loved this movie. When I left the theatre, I was so giddy I wanted to sleep in my car and catch the first matinee the next morning. I loved the source material, but was blown away by how good this movie was. Now before I have a nerd-gasm, I need to collect myself and try and hit a few major points to get you to understand why this was so good.

First, I’ll discuss the general idea of this comic book-based movie. Michael Cera is Scott Pilgrim, a 22 year-old Canadian bass player who’s dating a High School girl. He lives in a basement apartment with his gay-friend Wallace (played by Kieran Culkin), and is just trying to get by. A short time into the movie, he meets Ramona (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead from Die Hard With A Vengeance). She’s mysterious, dangerous, and is unlike anyone he’s ever met before. He instantly falls in love with her and seeks her out. Shortly after gaining her attention, he learns that in order to stay with her he must defeat her seven evil Ex’s in hand to hand combat. This is where the movie really gets fun. The battles are amazing and each is different in its own right. No two battles are the same. From outright fist-fights, to bass-battles, to an epic ninja-like showdown, each fight is highly-stylized and worth the price of admission alone. Running through all of this is a comic-book, video-game theme. If you’re a fan of either or both, you’ll appreciate it that much more. If you’re not, don’t worry. There’s enough here to allow you to understand all of the references.

Let's see that kid from Zombieland punch like that!

Next I’d like to talk about Michael Cera. Michael has played our favorite awkward nerd since his breakout roll on Arrested Development. However, due to that shows poor ratings (even though everyone I know thinks it was amazing), you probably know him as that skinny guy from Superbad that wasn’t Mclovin. Since then, he’s had a few good roles (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist) and a bad one or two (Year One). That being said, I was super worried about him playing the role of my favorite bass-wielding, face-punching, heart-breaking, gay-roommate having hero. Within the first four minutes, all of my cares were put to rest. Watching him pick up and play the bass (the guitar, not the fish) for the first time was so organic and enjoyable, that I was able to just sit back and enjoy. His line delivery is flawless, his facial expressions were perfect, and his fight choreography was epic. (Yes I used the term epic. Watch the movie you’ll agree.)

An All-Star cast of Evil Exes!

The rest of the cast more than came through and there was even some very awesome performances by actors that appeared in only one scene that I can’t wait to see again. I could honestly write a paragraph on each and every role in the movie. This film is filled with so many one-liners that my friend and I were quoting them for an hour after the show, and then laughing our asses off.  This is easily the best film I’ve seen all year, and I would say the best I’ve seen since The Dark Knight. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough.

Do yourself a favor and make the time to see this movie.

Man I cannot agree with you more this movie rocked my world. I watched this immediately after The Expendable and while that movie was great this movie kicked its ass in my eyes because of the comedy packed into non-stop action and productive comical dialouge. This is an easy 5/5 ships
