The announcement we all knew would come eventually has finally made it to the ears of the Star Wars Geekdom of which I am a card carrying member. Today, at the annual Star Wars event, Celebration V, George Lucas announced, while being interviewed by Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, that they will be releasing all six Star Wars films on Blu-Ray next year.
As if seeing Star Wars 4, 5, & 6 in Blu-Ray wasn’t enough, there will be deleted scenes on these disks that none of us have ever seen! The most exciting of which is a fully fleshed out scene that was cut from Return of the Jedi in which Luke manufactures his first light saber. You will recall from Star Wars lore that one of the last things a Jedi-in-training needed to do was construct their own lightsaber, and Luke completes his right before heading to Jabba’s palace to rescue Han and Leia. The scene depicts him completing the saber, then depositing it inside of R2D2 for use later. The reason this scene is so rare is that it was deleted from the film just before it’s release, meaning that it has been scored and everything. I tend to get excited over geeky stuff like this, so bear with me…
However, and this is a BIG caveat to my excitement, it looks as if you will not be able to purchase the original trilogy without ponying up for the horrible, repugnant, fetid, mind-rapingly-bad prequels. George is releasing the original trilogy in a box set of all six movies. Fuck me sideways and call me Aunt Carol – that blows goats. It blows goats so hard, in fact, that I will not be among the Star Wars faithful lining up outside of Best Buy on midnight the day of the film’s release. Nope. I can not, and WILL NOT be forced to purchase those awful prequels just to get my Star Wars Blu-Ray fix. I will happily sit back, watch the deleted clips and extras online, and wait for the movies to come out individually.
