Return to Westeros

Get ready for your return to Westeros

I remember the first time I read George R R Martin’s, A Game of Thrones. I was blown away by the number and complexity of the characters and the expansiveness of the world. It was a beast of a book at over 800 pages and I loved every minute of it. Over the next few months I devoured the three remaining books with each one being longer than the first. When I finished the fourth book I couldn’t wait to read the fifth which was due for publication in 2006. It was 2005 at the time. Six years later, Martin finally released the fifth book. It was a long enough gap that I feel the need to reread all 4500+ pages of the prior books before reading the newest installment. Suffice it to say that hasn’t happened yet.

In the interim (2007) I was reading Entertainment weekly and saw an article that HBO had purchased the television rights for the series. To say I was excited would be an understatement. My brother, who first suggested the books, and I had often discussed what an amazing television series these books would make if done right. They were far too complex to be accurately represented in a movie, but we didn’t see a big chance of anyone ever making them into a show. I checked back on the status a few times to see if they would actually start production, but there wasn’t much to read. Then sometime in early 2010 the first teaser was shown. I think my heart skipped a few beats.

A year later I was not at all disappointed. I knew that HBO would do a good job with the series, but they honestly exceeded my expectations. The show was everything I could have hoped for. Well, mostly. They did HBO-ify it, but that was to be expected. If there’s not a sex scene in the book they’ll figure out a way to get some boobs in there, don’t you worry. I also have a few gripes about the representation of the Dire Wolves, but I’d hate to spoil anything for you if you haven’t read the books or seen the show.

All this to say, the second season starts in just 2 months. I’m beyond excited. The first season exceeded all of my expectations and I can’t wait to see what they come up with this season as well as meet some of the new characters that come into play. Check out the newest trailer below.
