Deep in the masses of pop-type music lies one of my absolute favorite bands of all time, The Shins. This band is one of the most impressive and lyrically genius ones that I’ve had the pleasure to experience. They originally formed as a side project for the singer-songwriter-overall-genius, James Mercer, and began to get some notice while on tour with Modest Mouse in 2001.
I personally don’t know many people who are familiar with the band (other than an ex of mine who introduced me to them) and it really bums me out because they’re so damn good. My first experience with them was during the movie “Garden State” starring Scrubs’ own Zach Braff. The movie, which was written by Braff, was strongly based around The Shins. At one point he passes a girl he met his headphones, which are playing New Slang and says “you gotta listen to this one, it’ll change your life, I swear.” So apparently I’m not the only one head over heels for this band! Anyways, check them out and let me know what you guys think.
