The decision to reboot the Spiderman series came as a surprise to most of us despite the abysmal third outing from the Sam Raimi run canon. It feels too quick to kill off the other series and start over, but Hollywood did it with The Hulk (THREE TIMES!) and they weren’t willing to take the series in the direction that Raimi wanted, so now we’re forced to hit the reset button on this franchise.
Andrew Garfield, a near-unknown, was cast as the lead, which means that the film is currently sitting with ZERO star power. There’s no way the studio is going to release this film without a bankable star to put on the posters, which means you can expect to see a major name as the villain as well as a hot young actress to play Peter’s love interest (who will most likely be Mary Jane.) Now let’s move on to where I break your heart.
Hillary Duff is being considered for the film. No one is saying that she’s a lock for anything, but they’re not keeping it a secret that she has been given the script. If the studio believes that Hillary Duff is a good candidate for their reboot then I think you can get a good sense of where this reboot is headed. I hate to be an alarmist – but ALARM ALARM ALARM! Considering Duff for this film is not a good sign! It means that the money matters more then the quality. I’m not saying this because I have some deep seeded hatred for Duff, I simply recognize that she is NOT a proven actress and would be hired only for the audience she would pull into theaters. It’s not a good thing to see that the studio is so concerned about the revenue before the script and the actors have even been finalized.
Let’s hope cooler heads prevail here and they hire an ACTRESS to star in the new Spiderman franchise rather then a bobble head doll that the kiddos like to look at.
