An Ode to GAME

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012
We are gathered here today to mourn the death of our beloved friend. A giver. A taker. A flawed friend. But a friend all the same.
GAME was a good man. He was there for us all when we suddenly had the urge to own something. His collection of titles was endless, and we all took something from him at least once. I remember the days when he was the one place you could get games from. Before cruel fate intervened.
He supplied the community with everything. On the occasions of a sale, we would flock to him, grabbing the latest bargains. Even in the last few days before his passing, millions went to him to pay their respects, and honour him one last time by picking up some games. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that GAME will be universally missed.
I occasionally popped round a few times, especially recently. See if he had any deals, any preorder bonuses. But no. They’d been missing recently. GAME just couldn’t keep up. Because of…the murders.
Now then. We should not hate the murderers. We should be accepting. We should hate the acts though. The shameless undercutting by senseless supermarket staff. The deals offered by Amazon that no one could match. That’s what pushed him to the limit. It was slow, and it was painful. But it had to happen. Although we all visited him as much as we could, it didn’t give him the energy. The will to live. It just left him. It’s not our fault. It’s not his fault. It’s not even Amazon’s fault. It’s no one’s fault. It was destined to happen.
Unfortunately, he was turned to a disreputable way of life. The business of trade-ins. Some may frown on him for this. But it was necessary. In dire circumstances, a living has to be earned, honestly or not. Judging someone is never the answer. Judging a friend is worse still. He did what he could to survive, and we can’t blame him for that.
Even this, though, wasn’t enough. He was in pain. The last few days were tough, seeing him reduced to selling his stock, and then selling his own body. But now, at last, the pain has gone. It’s finally over. And he’s in a better place now. The place where Woolworths is. With Ottakars. A better place.
GAME was a good man. The world will be worse off without him. Although the supermarkets think they can replace him, they can’t. No one can match that dedication and knowledge of games that he had. And that’s sad. RIP GAME. You will be missed.

BAFTA Video Game Awards: Liveblog!
Last Updated on Saturday, 17 March 2012 01:26

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Today is the day. The most prestigious day. After the sham that was the Spike VGAs late last year, the kings are back. With a superiority complex, they’re going to do an awards show properly. With taste. With style. With elegance. With actual awards instead of freaking mini games! Yes, it’s the BAFTAs. The gaming BAFTAs. People ask for ‘the Oscars for games.’ We don’t get that. But BAFTAs will more than suffice.

The awards ceremony kicks off at 9PM GMT, and we’ll be liveblogging right here starting at 8.30PM. There will be fun. There will be laughs. And there will be goddamn video games. See you then.

16.34

And that’s it! We’re done here. Thanks for sticking along, was great fun! See you at the next liveblog!

And the nominees are…Uncharted 3 (fantastic game), Deus Ex: Human Revolution (haven’t really played it), Skyrim (oh my god too good, but is the story really the highlight?), Arkham City (HAS to win), LA Noire (great game, but story was lacking), Portal 2 (Ooh, that was fantastic).

Shaxster, the worst gamer in the world, is back! And he’s got a Shaxster Plays video with him! 11 minutes of dying playing the insanely difficult Super Meat Boy is what we’ve got here, and it’s rather amusing. Those noises are definitely atypical. Definitely. Enjoy!

IOS Game of The Week: Game Dev Story

Welcome to this exciting fourth iOS Game of The Week!  This time I will be showing off Game Dev Story!

Your very own game studio!

If you like Sim City and video game development then you will LOVE Game Dev Story.  This Japanese-ported application was developed by the small dev team, Kairosoft.   And they have done a mighty-fine job with this title!  The game is an intense 16-bit simulation of none other than a game development studio!   Your job is to manage your employees and games in development by hiring, firing, moving, training and advertising!  It may seem simple, but the game can get very exciting, and it is extremely satisfying to get a game out the door and see those critic reviews.  Kairosoft knows that you won’t be left entirely satisfied with developing games or sticking with 4 employees, so they give you multiple opportunities to upgrade your office space or start developing consoles of your own!  To keep it interesting and challenging there is a simulated “GAMEDEX” (E3) event which you can attend and present your games.  In order to mix it up and keep you on your toes they also throw in other console development by SENGA, SONNY, and INTENDRO, which you can choose to purchase a license from to develop games for the systems.  This part is where a little gaming knowledge may come in (hint: develop games on the Intendro Super IES)

In the end Game Dev Story offers deep, addictive gameplay while keeping it simple, and giving you those short bursts of fun we have all come to love!

I am a sucker when Steam decides to offer me cheap games, and so I now have a long list of these games cluttering up my library. I grabbed my friend, BodsterBug, made him play a game and then proceeded to recorded the experience. For those that know him you know what to expect, for those that don’t….. let’s just say, I think he’s “special”.
