When you first hear there is a new movie coming out called, Tyrannosaur, you undoubtedly conjure up images of CG dinosaurs ripping apart teenagers. At least that’s what I thought of. But this is something entirely different, and probably much, much better then what I was imagining.
Tyrannosaur is the first film by Paddy Considine, an actor that had parts in The Bourne Ultimatum (as a journalist that Bourne was protecting) and Hot Fuzz (as Andy Wainwright.) In his directorial debut, he is going dark, and I mean really, really dark. Tyrannosaur has been compared to Requiem For a Dream in terms of bleakness! Seeing as RFaD is one of my all time favorite films, I think I’m going to be seeing this one as well.
Peter Mullan plays Joseph, an aging widower with a serious anger management issue. In his travels he meets Hannah, played by Olivia Colman, who seems to think there is a light hidden somewhere in his dark soul. However, it seems that Olivia has a dark secret as well, but hers involves an excruciatingly brutal relationship with an abusive husband. I think we can all see where this is going, and it isn’t someplace cheery. Anyhow, watch the trailer for yourself and see if it doesn’t make you want to see the whole thing.
