Shaxster June 2, 201412:58 pm

Right, WWDC is over. No watch. No TV. No MBA Retina. No iPad Pro. Thanks for joining us anyway!

Shaxster June 2, 201412:57 pm

He’s thanking all of the Apple employees that worked on all the software.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:56 pm

Not sure we’re going to see any hardware today then. What we have seen, though, is seamless integration of the highest order.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:55 pm

Tim Cook’s wrapping up now.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:55 pm

iOS 8 is available to the public in the fall, developer preview today.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:54 pm

Shaxster June 2, 201412:54 pm

And that’s iOS 8 pretty much.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:54 pm

Right, that’s Swift. Basically, Apple have just overhauled code.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:50 pm

I’m not gonna pretend to understand this. But people are really into it.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:50 pm

It shows you the stuff you’re coding in real time in a sidebar. Which is useful for fast iteration.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:48 pm

I really hope this will tie into Unity for easy game development.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:47 pm

This is apparently a very big deal. The dev crowd is going crazy.

Will June 2, 201412:46 pm

Xcode is being changed from Objective-C to a new programming language called Swift

Shaxster June 2, 201412:46 pm

Shaxster June 2, 201412:46 pm

It’s called Swift. And this is huge.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:45 pm

Apple have just announced a new programming language.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:44 pm

SceneKit, specifically, is a 3D scene renderer for casual games. Nice.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:44 pm

SpriteKit and SceneKit are out to help make casual game development easier. Games will look nicer and have better physics engines.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:43 pm

Shaxster June 2, 201412:42 pm

This is like PS4 level graphics. Insane that it’s running on a mobile. We’ll definitely be seeing games on Apple TV soon.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:42 pm

Each fish has its own AI! Every petal is being physically simulated! You can draw in the sand and it looks awesome!

Shaxster June 2, 201412:41 pm

This is gorgeous. It’s a zen garden demo: petals are all over the place.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:40 pm

Tim Sweeney from Epic is out. Expect a look at the new Unreal Engine for iOS.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:40 pm

The Frostbite console engine is running on mobile. That’s insane. Crytek are bringing their console engine to iOS as well.

Will June 2, 201412:40 pm

Frostbite on iOS. What is the world coming to!

Shaxster June 2, 201412:39 pm

EA are bringing the Frostbite engine to mobile. 1.3 million polygons at a time.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:39 pm

Gives games full access to the full power of the A7 processor. I’m feeling a new Infinity Blade announcement…

Shaxster June 2, 201412:38 pm

Metal: improves game performance on iOS devices.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:38 pm

Free depending on how big your company is. Nice.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:37 pm

CloudKit: makes all that nice cloud stuff a lot easier. Free…within limits.

Will June 2, 201412:37 pm

My life! Just wow, THIS IS THE FUTURE!

Shaxster June 2, 201412:36 pm

HomeKit is a common protocol linking locks, lights, cameras, doors, thermostats, plugs, switches…integrates with Siri as well. NICE.

Will June 2, 201412:36 pm

Homekit is here now! You can open doors, turn on lights, garage door, Siri integration!

Shaxster June 2, 201412:35 pm

Camera APIs: faster performance, non destructive editing. Means you’ll see a lot more third party camera apps.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:35 pm

Can use Touch ID to protect individual apps.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:34 pm

TouchID for third party apps as well. Perfect.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:33 pm

Shaxster June 2, 201412:33 pm

Oh dayum, third party keyboards. Apple is going all Android.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:32 pm

Bing Translate extension can translate text inline within Safari. And then you can share directly to Pinterest using the Pinterest extension UI. This is what we’ve always wanted, really.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:32 pm

Shaxster June 2, 201412:31 pm

Widgets: there’s an edit button in Notification Centre and you can add in an app like SportsCenter: information on your sports teams right from the Notification Centre. eBay have a widget as well: tells you if you’re being outbid, and can submit a leading bid RIGHT FROM the Centre.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:30 pm

Oh, this is so cool. You can open the VSCO Cam photo filter extensions from within the photos app. Very, very cool.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:29 pm

Right, so apps can reach out to other apps. You can add apps to share sheets, or translations from within Safari, if the dev implements it. Photo filters built into the Photos app, and WIDGETS FOR NOTIFICATION CENTER HELL YES

Shaxster June 2, 201412:28 pm

Apps can extend the system and offer services to other apps. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but apparently it’s huge.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:27 pm

4000 new APIs.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:27 pm

Craig’s back. Again.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:27 pm

The SDK now: software development kit. Biggest release since the launch of the App Store. This is going to be huge.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:26 pm

Previews – basically trailers of apps, like on the Play Store. And TestFlight, a beta test service. Devs can invite users to beta test their app. Nice. All coming with iOS 8 this fall – with the new iPhone, of course.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:25 pm

App bundles as well. NICE! You can buy multiple apps in one purchase.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:24 pm

Explore tab to look through by category. Top trending searches. Continuous scrolling, related searches.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:24 pm

Talking about the insane App Store stats. The numbers are so big, that Apple need to start making the App Store curated to let the best stuff shine. Which is exactly what they’re doing.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:23 pm

But now…what does iOS 8 mean for devs? That’s what Tim Cook’s talking about right now.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:22 pm

Big updates for China: greatly improved Maps, Lunar Calendar support and better weather data. And *that* is iOS 8.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:22 pm

Siri – can say “Hey, Siri” and you can start talking without touching your phone. Shazam song recognition as well. Nice.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:21 pm

Also includes videos, by the way.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:21 pm

New storage plans: first 5GB free, then 20GB for $0.99 per month or 200GB for $3.99/month. Goes all the way up to 1TB – uses your iCloud storage allowance.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:20 pm

Some really great new photo editing features – brightness and shadows adjusting. Looks very nice.

Will June 2, 201412:19 pm

An OSX photo editing software based around iCloud will be available from early 2015

Will June 2, 201412:18 pm

Edits on photos on any device sync across all devices

Shaxster June 2, 201412:16 pm

New editing features for photos: edit once, edit will show up across all platforms.

Will June 2, 201412:15 pm

If your kid uses your credit card for a purchase, you will be prompted on your iOS device to confirm it.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:15 pm

Every photo is now available on all devices. With search to help organise them.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:14 pm

Crucially, this means that the days of sharing an Apple ID are over. Which is very nice.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:13 pm

I really like this shared family stuff. Will be very useful to keep tabs on everyone and to share all your rentals, music etc.

Will June 2, 201412:12 pm

Next up, family sharing.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:12 pm

Healthcare providers can receive your data, and then send some back. Nice way to stay in contact with your doctors.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:11 pm

Tying in with some health providers as well: The Mayo Clinic, for one.

Will June 2, 201412:11 pm

HealthKit compiles all heath information from lots of apps including 3rd party ones.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:10 pm

Healthkit: gives you a single comprehensive place to store all your health data. From all the third party apps you care about: Nike+, Fitbit etc.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:09 pm

Right. Time for Health. WATCH WATCH WATCH WATCH.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:09 pm

Automatic Out of Office replies, that sort of stuff.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:08 pm

Increasing security across the board…all the stuff that those big companies like.

Will June 2, 201412:08 pm

98% of the Fortune 500 use iOS… so if you want to keep up with the elitists, get an iPhone.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:07 pm

Enterprise features! Who saw that coming.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:06 pm

iCloud Drive is the same stuff we saw in the Yosemite demo, but the iOS side of it. It’s basically Dropbox. Actually, it is Dropbox.

Will June 2, 201412:06 pm

Media sent via iMessage seems to last for 2 minutes with this new feature.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:05 pm

Can hear a voice message just by lifting your phone to your ear. COOL.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:05 pm

So many people will use this. The teens. All the teens.

Will June 2, 201412:04 pm

Oh god, Apple selfies!

Shaxster June 2, 201412:04 pm

They self destruct. That’s…Snapchat.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:03 pm

Sharing location with other conversation members can be useful. Will avoid a lot of those “WHERE ARE YOU” texts.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:01 pm

Tap to talk: press, hold, and send an audio or video clip you take. It’s Snapchat.

Will June 2, 201412:01 pm

You can see all of the pictures and attachments on a current thread.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:00 pm

Location sharing with other conversation members. Noice.

Shaxster June 2, 201412:00 pm

Group messaging’s been improved – can name a thread, add and remove people.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:59 am

This is predictive testing at its best – it’s all local, never leaves the device (unlike with Google). Very contextualised. Which is great.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:59 am

Will June 2, 201411:58 am

With quick type there is now predictive text… just like Android

Shaxster June 2, 201411:58 am

Predictive typing. Directly nicked from Android, shamelessly but it’s probably better than what Google put together.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:58 am

QuickType! WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:57 am

Will June 2, 201411:57 am

Spotlight is pretty OP just like OSX now.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:57 am

All the new features from Mac Spotlight are on iOS as well – can search the app store, points of interest, news, showtimes, music from the iTunes Store…everything. It’s Siri without the voice.

Will June 2, 201411:56 am

Hi!

Shaxster June 2, 201411:55 am

Can easily archive, flag and trash from mail as well. Just drag all the way left.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:55 am

We’re joined by Will now, as well – he’ll be providing us with some more analysis.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:54 am

There isn’t anything huge here. Interactive notifications are here.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:54 am

Can like and comment from Facebook notifications as well.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:53 am

Can accept and decline calendar invites from the lockscreen too.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:52 am

Mail’s been redesigned.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:51 am

Double tapping homebutton shows you recent contacts now as well.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:51 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:51 am

BANG interactive notifications.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:50 am

iOS 8 is announced…time to see what they’ve got.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:49 am

This is really anti-Android. More so than usual.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:48 am

89% of customers are running iOS 7. Which is a huge percentage.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:47 am

97% overall satisfaction with iOS 7. Impressive.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:46 am

Many were switchers from Android. “They’d bought an Android phone – by mistake – and then sought a better experience, and a better life.” Wow.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:46 am

iPhone’s passed 500M units. Which is insane. 130 million new iOS customers in the past year.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:45 am

800 million iOS devices. Fast approaching a billion….

Shaxster June 2, 201411:45 am

Tim’s back. It’s iOS time.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:44 am

Oh, and there’s a public beta over the summer which you can sign up for online.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:44 am

Available to devs today, and to everyone else in the fall. For free, of course.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:44 am

What a brilliant way to both show off the new features and then reference the Beats acquisition. And that’s Yosemite.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:43 am

Dre’s asking what time he should show up to work. This is awesome.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:43 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:42 am

Oh, now he’s calling Dr Dre.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:42 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:42 am

He just denied a call from his Mac. And now he’s dialling from a restaurant’s webpage on his Mac.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:41 am

Ok, he’s browsing a webpage on his Mac and his iPad prompts him to open up Safari and carry on from where he left off.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:40 am

Right, so he’s typing an email on his phone, and his Mac prompts him to open up Mail. And bang he’s right where he left off.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:40 am

Demo time.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:39 am

Your phone acts as a relay, bouncing SMS messages between your Mac and the other person. Happens with phone calls as well. Can answer and use your Mac as a speaker phone. This is incredible. Can also make phone calls from your Mac as well.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:38 am

SMS as well. I think we’re about to see texting from the Mac.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:38 am

It’s based around proximity awareness of where your devices are. Your Mac can also recognise your phone to create a wireless hotspot straight way. Awesome.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:37 am

The future, folks. We’re living in it.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:37 am

Holy crap there’s something called HandOff. You can swipe something over from your Mac to your iPad. That’s. Amazing.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:37 am

This is a big one: AirDrop works between iOS and Mac. Very useful.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:35 am

The new image editing feature (called Markup) could be very helpful. Can draw around the image, point things out…also recognises things like drawings of arrows and turns them into actual, vectorised arrows. Same with drawing a speech bubble. Clever.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:33 am

The new tab view.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:32 am

The new design does look good.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:32 am

Is great for web standards as well. HTML5 Premium Video: can stream from Netflix without the Silverlight plugin – 2 hours extra streaming time thanks to energy efficiency.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:29 am

Can easily share webpages as well. New tab view is very nice, stacking sites.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:29 am

Has all the cool omnibox stuff from Chrome. Search is more powerful, mix of Google and spotlight.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:28 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:28 am

Safari now.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:28 am

You can draw on and sign PDFs right from Mail as well. That’s nice.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:27 am

Mail’s undergone a big redesign. Simplified and looks a lot nicer. Mail Drop fixes the issue of big attachments as well – it will be sent encrypted via iCloud to the recipient. And they get an iCloud link if they don’t have a Mac. Attachments can be up to 5GB. That’s awesome.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:26 am

iCloud Drive. All your iCloud documents are accessible from the Finder. Syncs with iOS *and* you can store your own files. Also accessible from iOS AND Windows. It’s about time.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:25 am

Oh nice – can also search for local restaurants, films, showtimes…that’s very, very cool. They’ve built the best parts of Google Now and Siri directly into OS X.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:24 am

Can also do conversions and the like in there. A lot like some of the more useful Google searches.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:23 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:22 am

Spotlight ties into contacts etc. as well. Will also search your emails, events, reminders and the web.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:22 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:22 am

The Today view in Notification Centre is awesome. Has weather, calendar, ESPN…whatever you want.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:21 am

The new day view in Calendar is very helpful – shows location information and detailed meeting information.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:20 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:20 am

Spotlight has totally changed – it’s a lot like the app Alfred now. Big and in the center of the screen.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:19 am

Now has widgets and a today view in Notification Center. Which is now much more useful.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:19 am

Shaxster June 2, 201411:18 am

The translucency is really noticeable in apps like FaceTime and the sidebar of Messages.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:17 am

A dark mode as well: nice for getting power work done. That got a huge cheer.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:17 am

Main changes are with the broad UI stuff: translucent title bars and flatter UI at the top of the apps. Window also adapts to your desktop background, because of the translucency. New icons are quite nice too.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:16 am

It’s looking good. Really good. Not too over the top.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:15 am

This is the iOS-ification of OS X. Very flat. Very colourful. Very simple.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:14 am

Starting by looking at the new design. Expect a big overhaul.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:14 am

We’re actually getting OS X Yosemite this year. Version 10.10.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:13 am

Weed jokes in an Apple press conference. I love this world.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:13 am

Time for a new Californian location…Oxnard, Rancho Cucamonga and Weed were considered, he’s joking.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:12 am

Compares very favourably with Windows adoption rates, unsurprisingly. Anyway, Craig Federighi is up to talk the latest version of OS X.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:11 am

40 million copies of Mavericks installed so far. That’s a lot of copies: 50% of the install base.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:10 am

Talking about Macs now. 80 million install base. While industry declined by 5%, Mac install base increased by 12%.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:10 am

A huge new dev release as well: whole section of the presentation for that. Smart home APIs?

Shaxster June 2, 201411:09 am

Gathered to talk about OS X and iOS today – they will now work seamlessly together. Time for a universal app store, perhaps?

Shaxster June 2, 201411:08 am

The youngest audience member is 13. That’s crazy. 9 million total registered developers.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:08 am

Whole bunch of engineers and developers are there to help devs get their grips on developing for Apple platforms.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:07 am

Milestone year for WWDC. 25th year of WWDC.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:07 am

“We’re here to celebrate our developers”.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:06 am

Right, done. Tim Cook’s out.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:04 am

This is a really, really long intro. Just people talking about why apps on Apple platforms are great.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:01 am

Video talking about “how do you know who a developer is”. Woefully cheesy.

Shaxster June 2, 201411:00 am

And here…we…go.

Shaxster June 2, 201410:58 am

Nilay Patel from The Verge is confident that we’re going to see some smart home stuff: locks, thermostats and lights. https://twitter.com/reckless/status/473506553954189313

Shaxster June 2, 201410:55 am

From Twitter: “Word on the street: the truly big stuff didn’t leak”. Means we could be getting some hardware – watch or TV.

Shaxster June 2, 201410:54 am

Haim’s The Wire is playing now. Wires…cables…wireless charging?

Shaxster June 2, 201410:53 am

Worth noting that the Apple Store website is still up and running as usual – normally gets taken down during a product announcement.

Shaxster June 2, 201410:52 am

We’ll definitely be getting new iOS and OS X software today, will probably also see some new hardware. I’m reasonably confident about a watch, although the lack of leaks suggests the opposite.

Shaxster June 2, 201410:50 am

wait i don’t even think this is bastille. who knows.

Shaxster June 2, 201410:50 am

Right, we’re live. Bastille’s Pompeii is currently playing. Pompeii involved lots of running away…running…iWatch? (joking, of course).

Shaxster June 2, 201410:02 am

Thanks for joining us. We’ll be kicking things off in about 45 minutes with some last minute analysis and predictions. Stay tuned.
