Nerves and I have been doing the Talkingship podcast for over 2 years now. We have over 100 episodes under our belt and far more music recommendations in that time. The Soundsystem segment of the original show was always our favorite and now that we have a show dedicated entirely to music we have an even better outlet to recommend tunes for you.
As music fans, one of the things we set out to do with Talkingship was to get some unknown music into the hands of people that might not have ever heard it otherwise. A lot of times that meant the bands we were recommending would soon disappear into the ether, never to be heard from again, but sometimes we managed to strike gold and recommend a band that was headed for a great music career. On episode # 71 of Talkingship we recommended a band from London called The XX. Well, it looks like we hit it right on the mark with this band.
Today, The XX won the Mercury Prize for their first, self titled album. It is a mellow, beautiful piece of rock-pop that is unique and dramatically good. The best description I’ve ever read for this band was that it was the greatest make-out music ever created. That explains the music pretty well, although I would challenge that you can make out with a beer and get the same effect. Do yourself a favor and check this band out – they’re going to be huge.
