Guillermo del Toro’s working with EA, sources tell us. Is a Dead Space movie in the works?
We have learnt from insider sources that Guillermo del Toro, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and the upcoming Pacific Rim, is currently working with Electronic Arts on a Dead Space related project. It is unclear whether this is a movie adaptation of the franchise, or a new game altogether: del Toro has been working on a horror game of his own, inSANE, for several years now, and there is a chance that EA have acquired the publishing rights, or seen fit to include his ideas under the Dead Space umbrella.
inSANE was originally due to be published by THQ, before their financial woes forced its cancellation last August. In November of last year, del Toro said to IGN that he’d found a new studio for the game, and that it was “two years away” from completion. If that’s the case, this E3 would be the perfect time for an announcement.
The director has previously expressed great interest in video games, calling them “an incredible story-telling tool”. He was linked to a Halo movie at one point, but that never came to fruition. Another attempt at a game adaption wouldn’t be out of character for him, and considering his horror-movie history, Dead Space would be a perfect fit.
We do know that the project is linked to Android devices, perhaps strengthening the theory that it is game-related. At any rate, an announcement will be made by EA and del Toro at E3: most likely at EA’s press conference on June 10.
