View Full Version : Covers

I enjoy covers for the most part. Usually when they are impromptu at a concert. It is even acceptable to put one on an album. To do this, it must be a good song choice like a deep cut, or not so well known song by a less famous band. Not so much as a single from an album by an established artist.
That being said, there are just some songs that should NEVER be covered. They are perfect as they are or they are classic beyond touch.

An example of songs that are great and acceptable as covers:
Metallica Garage Days (the original please)
Metallica - Am I Evil (My favorite Metallica song)
Type O Negative - Summer breeze
Anthrax - Got The TIme
Manson - Personal Jesus and Tainted Love (Love him or hate him, they are good covers)

Then there is the fun covers (genere jumping or making fun)
Type O Negative - Hit Me One More Time (Britney spears)
Tori Amos - Raining Blood (Slayer) - As a huge Slater fan, I dare say this is darker and more intense than Slayer's version

Two examples of songs that you can only dishonor by covering them:
Fred Durst and John Rzeznik - Wish You Were Here - This is an abomination of a perfect song. I don't care if it was a 9/11 tribute. There are many other songs they could have ruined. I actually like Durst's version of Behind Blue Eyes, but this cover is a travesty on the art of music.

Mariah Carrey - Open Arms - See Wish You Were Here for my opinion of this cover.

That being said, list your favorite cover, the coolest fun cover, and your most hated cover.

I would have to agree with Don about the "wish you were here" cover. Not only did it suck, but they changed the lyrics... who does that?!

As for my favorites- I have to say, that I am not a fan of Brittney Spears... BUT... Lily Allen did a cover of her song "Womanizer" which I love- Even if you hate the song you can't help but get it stuck in your head once you hear it.

Also... One of my all time favorites is an artist by the name of Heather Nova~ She is perfection, in my opinion. She did a cover of " I'm on fire" by Bruce Springsteen-

Reel big fish did a cover of Van Morrison's Brown eye'd girl... Which I totally dig.

Tori Amos did a cover of Eminem's 97' Bonnie and Clyde.

Obviously, I am a HUGE fan of Tori Amos... Her voice is beautiful, she's real, and a bit twisted. I think she can cover any song with great emotion and feeling. Again, most of her covers sound better than the original. Exception of her Cure cover of Lovesong~ Because no one does it like The cure :D

Agreed. Tori does awesome covers.

I'm partial to some of the songs Weezer have covered recently. Specifically, "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" and "Kids/Poker Face".

Peter Gabriel and Hot Chip covering Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" is one of my favorites.

I also enjoy Paramore's cover of The Killers "Use Somebody" and Will Young's version of "Hey Ya". Just to name a few.

I'd like to point out one that should be in the "Dishonors it by covering it" category (as if it wasn't already)...

Madonna "American Pie"

That b***h needs to burn in hell for what she did to that song... and that's just for singing it. That goddamn music video they did for it just made an already horrendous cover WORSE, and I didn't think it was possible to make that cover worse, until the point in the video where she started dry humping that guys leg.

Yep, that video not only put a bullet in Don McLean's classic song, it took a steaming dump on the still bleeding corpse.

If you haven't guessed yet... Madonna... not a fan.

@Quinstar - That's the first I've heard that! It's awesome.

04-01-2010, 08:23 AM
Yeah, they played it on XMU one day and I loved it. I've never heard it since.

Rascal Flatts did a cover of "Life Is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane for Cars when it came out and I think it's better than the Cochrane version.

Cochrane (the only version I could find that didn't have embedding disabled):

I also like RHCP's cover of Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder), though I won't say it's better than Stevie's version.

As for bad ones? Fall Out Boy did a cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It." I hate it (I'll spare you Michael Jackson's version, since we all know it).

This is my band's myspace (hasn't been updated in half a year or so). We've got two covers up: one of Dr. Horrible, and one of I Will Survive (Cake Version). I play guitar, my friend sings.

Avenged Sevenfold has a pretty good cover of Walk.

Arctic Monkeys cover of "take it or leave it" by The Strokes

So, I completely forgot about The Postal Service's cover of Against all Odds (Phil Collins).

Agreed Cake's version of I Will Survive is pretty good (I should of changed my freakin lock) Cake also does a great version of War Pigs. Its on the album B-sides and Rarities.

Cake has been a go to band for me for along time.

You won't like this cover if you like the original, I kinda like it personally.

Strange Cover:

The Album "Fade to Bluegrass" by Iron Horse.

It's an entire album of blugrass covers of Metallica songs. The Four Horsemen is my favorite (and my current ringtone).
