Hey guys,

I'll be hosting a liveblog (or as live as I can get away with here at the office) with the announcements and interesting moments from the Microsoft E3 Press Conference. So yeah, I'll be running my post count up, but if you miss the press conference for some reason this thread should serve as a pretty comprehensive report on what happened. Feel free to join in the discussion!

FYI, I'll be doing one of these for the Sony and Nintendo events tomorrow too, so long as I can (again, work).

The show will now start at 10:30 am, 30 minute delay.

Godfree's Livestreaming right now, good for some pre-event festivities:

They're showing Call of Duty: Black Ops now. A tunnel scene, looks pretty gritty. You can still tell its a Treyarch production, but it looks more cinematic than World at War.

We just stole a hind helicopter. Let's see some rain.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:37 AM
Actually, I'm watching it on Spike on my TV right now. They are doing a live show of the Microsoft conference right now.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:37 AM
The helo scene looks on-rails. NPC piloting the thing, the player shooting. The bullet tracers look great.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:40 AM
Yep, looks cool. First I have actually paid attention to Black Ops.

And no surprise- Xbox timed-exclusivity for Activision DLC for next couple years

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:40 AM
This would make for an incredible Spec Ops mission. We are taking this little town apart. Very impressive destruction. The end of the preview was pretty abrupt, no cliffhanger or anything.

Big news for the CoD franchise: For 2010-2012, the add-ons for every CoD game will come first on the 360. Timed exclusives.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:42 AM
Kojima on his way out. Looks like some Rising talk. He's got a fucked-up looking t-shirt. No surprise there.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:42 AM
Wait...Kojima has a Gears shirt on!

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:46 AM
Oh sweet, MGS Rising gameplay! Looks like its going to focus on sword play. He just cut pillars of a balcony down and the balcony collapsed on the enemies beneath. It was looking like just a cutscene trailer, but they have a chance to do something pretty unique with that sword gameplay.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:46 AM
Rising will have some fairly destructable environments, to use your HF sword on, looks sweet. And it looked like Raiden was siphoning energy from an enemy after killing it.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:48 AM
Cliffy B on his way out now, moar Gears now, and demoing 4 player co-op

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:48 AM
Here comes Cliffy. A live gameplay demo of 4-player story co-op. This should be interesting.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:49 AM
$5 says that was a Carmine that was getting beat by his own arm

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:50 AM
Looks pretty Gears-y. Someone should really turn their mics off the speakers. They're talking over the sound of the game.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:52 AM
They're facing a flamethrowing dismembering monster now. Pretty sweet fight. It looks like the four of them are coordinating well, and that seems necessary. I could see this becoming a killer game to play with three friends.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:52 AM
I have to say, I like the mutating enemies idea. Keeps you on your toes, not knowing which might mutate

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:52 AM
"Ohhhh crap!" Says one of them. As if they haven't seen it a thousand times before.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:54 AM
There's a new mode coming for Gears 3 - called Beast. No details, we'll find out later.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:54 AM
Cool, Fable 3 talk now. Maybe hype will finally be lived up to

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:54 AM
Here comes Molyneux. Fable III ships October 26.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:56 AM
For some reason, the way they made Fable 3 look, I feel like they should be fighting American Revolutionaries

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:58 AM
Well that was quick. Just a quick trailer with some gameplay, nothing we haven't seen before. Now we're on to something new from Crytek. A new 300-looking game with only a codename. Looks like its still a few years out.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 11:58 AM
New Microsoft Game Studios Partner- Crytek

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 11:59 AM
We're about to see some campaign gameplay from Halo: Reach.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:01 PM
Looks like you're tougher in this game than you were in ODST. Demo guy is taking a lot of fire and hasn't been in much real danger yet.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:01 PM
I can see a health bar flashing under the shield bar. Game looks cool so far

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:01 PM
Jitterbug, this looks like the large-scale open warfare battle you were hoping for. Lots of enemies, lots of allies, lots of different ways to attack. Very un-Halo.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:03 PM
They've left the open battlefield and are now inside the building. Looks like they're here as reinforcements to defend against a covenant assault. Finally Halo looks like its getting a next-gen gloss to it. The graphics look very good.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:03 PM
Ooh, a cool takedown move from bashing an enemy from behind (much like a rogue's sneak attack)

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:04 PM
They just launched a shuttle, looks like your character inside. Oh, shit. Space battles. Looks like gameplay.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:04 PM
An on-rails space fight, not sure if I am hyped about that

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:05 PM
Here come some details on Kinect's interface capabilities.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:06 PM
An on-rails space fight, not sure if I am hyped about that

Definitely will be a break from the norm, should be a good change of pace if used sporadically through the game.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:09 PM
But, space battles shouldn't be on rails. I would rather be able to have some free flight to choose who to chase or where I go.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:09 PM
Okay, this is looking pretty hot. Wave to sign in, wave again to go to the Kinect nav screen. It shows you a grid of applications that you can just say to open. The guy keeps addressing his Xbox as "Xbox". I wonder if I can rename it as "Megatron."

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:10 PM
Oh man, the first thing on this guy's playlist was Justin Beiber. That got some laughs.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:11 PM
Be right back. Keep me posted Niyon!

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:14 PM
Well, they are demoing Video Kinect to do video conferencing between Windows Live and XBL people.
And now they have just loaded a video of The Last Airbender during the live video conference by selecting options at the bottom of the chat.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:14 PM
Just showed Kinect tracking basic movement by moving itself to follow the person

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:16 PM
Oh, Espn is bieing announced for the 360, offering in-demand events for nearly every sport

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:16 PM
They just talked about Video Kinect with a canned conversation, its a video chat service.

Oh sweet! ESPN on the 360! Goodbye cable ...

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:20 PM
ESPN will have Kinect abilties to join sides and choose to see replays

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:21 PM
And, they show that there will be the ESPN scores during games to keep people busy trying to see their game and info from all the other games around that time

Wrong choice of words, but it will only be during the ESPN, not during Xbox games

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:24 PM
That tiger seems too unrealistic! I want to see the tiger go tiger

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:26 PM
Wow, that "I love you" was pretty creepy.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:26 PM
Take your sunglasses off, d-bag. Here comes the Kinect shovelware.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:29 PM
I did the hurdles 20 years ago on an NES.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:29 PM
Oh my god, I totally didn't mean to miss that last hurdle and let you catch up

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:30 PM
Kinect sports seems interesting, gives more sports than Wii or even Sony has shown

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:31 PM
They just showed all of the Kinect Sports games. Bowling, Soccer, Volleyball, Ping pong, track and field. Now they're showing Joyride. A cart racer where you have to hold your hands out in front of you on an imaginary wheel. Yeah, that'll go over well.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:32 PM
or throw out your butt apparently to boost

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:33 PM
Hahah Darren just NAILED the presenter. "Thank you Lorenzo Lamas." Kinect Adventures looks like that game show Wipeout in video game form.

Pretty cool feature here: His buddy just joined in by walking in front of the camera. It recognized him, signed him in, and split the screen automatically. No manual manipulation needed for that.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:35 PM
Looks like Adventure will have camera spots during the minigames, presumably to take a picture of you looking like an idiot. I'm not the audience for this one.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:36 PM
and facebook integration to remind people how much of an idiot you looked while playing

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:39 PM
They're about to show off Your Shape: Fitness Evolved. Well this is some impressive tracking technology. It tracked the presenters sweater as she took it off. She's moving around as its scanning her and it isn't having a problem with it.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:41 PM
looks like a fancy fitness game for Kinect from Ubisoft. Concept is interesting, my fiancee likes how they will calibrate menus to her height and not just to mine (she is 4'10.5", and I'm about 6')

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:45 PM
Yeah that Your Shape game looks like it has some potential. Can't wait to see who gets drunk enough at PAX to try Dance Central. You can hear some audible laughter in the crowd. But that girl has got it going on.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:46 PM
Dance Central for Kinect: now feel even worse when you realize you can't dance, and everyone now knows it

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:49 PM
Oh great, they're giving more screen time to Dance Party than they gave to Halo.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:50 PM
Yea, but they were trying to make the people who are like me, too white to dance, feel better about that game by showing that it can hold our hands

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:50 PM
Launch date for Kinect - November 9th. 15 titles at launch.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:51 PM
Nov 4th for Kinect, wish they would have given a price and possible bundles

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:52 PM
Ok, Kinect Star Wars looks really cool, but I want to force choke storm troopers!

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:52 PM
Hopefully they get the collision engine figured out on this Star Wars game. Looks like it could be good but could be a real wash. How interested are you in a motion-controlled on-rails lightsaber game?

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:55 PM
They're showing Forza 3 using Kinect now. This is what I was interested in, would the graphical fidelity of a high-gloss game like Forza 3 be affected by the horsepower that Kinect needs to run? Apparently not, the game still looks great. But again, holding your arms out to drive?

Niyon
06-14-2010, 12:58 PM
Xbox360 Slim-REVEALED!

250GB HD
and built in Wi-Fi

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 12:59 PM
Oh wow, that new 360 model is small. I hadn't seen it up against an old one. $299 for the 360. And it is shipping to retailers today. It'll be available later this week. Holy shit, they just gave everyone in the audience a new 360 slim for free. Jerkoffs.

Niyon
06-14-2010, 01:00 PM
FUUUUUUUUUU! He pulled an Oprah and pretty much said all the people in the audience were getting a new 360, on MS

Niyon
06-14-2010, 01:03 PM
Well, interesting conference, kinda want to get my hands on the new 360, but I already have a 250 attached to mine.

And, my fiancee is considering getting a Kinect

Cam-Dog
06-14-2010, 01:27 PM
Damn that presser was shit was shit. No new games announced. Makes me think Sony will "win" E3 for sure this year.

Fisherman
06-14-2010, 01:31 PM
Obviously the biggest surprise was that they gave a new model 360 to everyone in the crowd. But I think the second biggest surprise was what wasn't announced: Hulu on the 360. I thought this was a slam-dunk for sure thing they were announcing. What are your guys' thoughts on the conference?

Cam-Dog
06-14-2010, 01:36 PM
The best game they showed was MGS Rising and thats a multiplatform game.
Neat seeing that new "slim" 360 but really it looks just about the same size but since its the same price and better looking if and when I get a 360 of my own I'll pick one up.
They didn't show a single XBLA game which is crazy because thats the stuff that I and most other Sony die hards like and want on the PS3 but we never get.

No kidding. Altogether this was a big fat one for Microsoft, unfortunately. They didn't even reveal a price point for their game-changing piece of hardware that launches in five months. Nice one.

Good surprise at the end there with the new hardware and the fact that its out this week! Not sure how they kept that completely under wraps.

Fisherman

Everything they showed for Kinect seemed like it was somewhere between proof-of-concept and game, not entirely one way or the other. That interface shit was pretty bad ass, but not for $150 for the standalone product. I'll keep using my thumbs like a caveman until that price drops down.

I think we all kind of knew that there wasn't going to be anything earth shattering announced. Same goes for the PS3. I don't know why people are saying that Sony is a sure fire win for this year's E3, I see nothing on the horizon for them that is all that exciting. Killzone 3 is about the best thing they've got going, and I would put a hell of a lot of money on Halo : Reach being both a better reviewed and better selling title.

All in all, it looks like this will be the year of the motion control - whether from Sony or Microsoft. And I am having a hard time giving a shit about that. However, the new slimmed down elite with the built in wi-fi is pretty sweet. If they would throw in a free year of Xbox Live with the purchase of the new Slim it would be a total slam dunk.

If the PS3 where to die it would be awesome too.

But don't you think the console alone merits the purchase/ Built in pure Wifi N, not the experimental N kind, but real N as well as a removable SATA drive and Natal ready?

And no those few features are not enough to replace a normal 360 at least to me anyway. They are just things that should have been built into the original (minus the kinect stuff).

You says "Something that should have..." I'm saying that your use of the word "should" is odd because you say it like they owe it to you or something that needed to happen. up to that point, no console on the market had Wi-FI included, and the 360 launched 1 year before the Wii or the PS3. They added Wi-Fi support because is something they did not have, then later MS came out with their Wi-Fi G adapter and then Wireless N and now is included in their new console. They had the Slim on their minds a while back, that is why when they released their 250 HDD bundles they did not release the HDD alone, if they would have, it would have killed the slim due to people just being able to buy a new HDD and a wi-fi addapter and there would have been no need to buy a new console.
